Cortland Defeats Potsdam 1-0 at Home for Third Consecutive Shutout

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) scored just 28 seconds into the second half, giving the Cortland women's soccer team its fourth consecutive victory in a 1-0 win over Potsdam on Holloway Field on Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. Cortland is now 6-2-4 (4-0-1 SUNYAC) on the year, while Potsdam falls to 3-10 (1-4 SUNYAC).

Vuotto's goal was her fifth of the season, and second consecutive game in which she found the back of the net. Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and Cam Stone (Ilion/ Central Valley Academy) each recorded an assist. Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) stopped all three shots she faced for her third consecutive shutout and sixth of the year.

Megan Fry had a strong game in goal for Potsdam, making 16 saves to keep the Bears within striking distance despite Cortland holding a 31-6 edge in shot attempts and a 19-3 advantage in shots on target. Three different players had a shot on goal for Potsdam.

Cortland came out firing in the opening 12 minutes minutes, forcing Fry to make four saves to keep the game scoreless.

In the 14th minute, Piper Klammer (Mahopac) got her head to Cosenza's cross off a corner kick, but a Potsdam defender cleared the ball off the line.

Potsdam's first strong opportunity of the game happened in the 36th minute, but Spendal was able to make the save on Madison Wagner's shot into the bottom right corner. Just over a minute later, Sarah Emmi flashed a shot just over the top of the crossbar.

Cortland had a pair of excellent opportunities in the 39th minute, as Cosenza dribbled around a defender down the right side and fired a shot that was parried away by a diving save from Fry. The ball rebounded out to Vuotto, who had her second-chance shot cleared off the line by a defender again as the game remained scoreless at the half.

The Red Dragons quickly opened the scoring out of halftime, with Vuotto scoring her first game-winning goal of the year. A lofted pass from the midfield by Stone bounced to Cosenza, who flicked the ball over her head to play Vuotto through on goal. The sophomore slotted home past the outstretched arms of Fry into the bottom left corner of the net.

Cortland continued to press for an insurance goal, but was unable to get the ball past Fry for a second time, with the Potsdam keeper making seven saves in the second half.

Potsdam had a potential opportunity to equalize against the run of play in the 85th minute, but Jillian Nicolosi (Farmingdale/St. Anthony's) made an excellent defensive play to regain possession for the Red Dragons and thwart the threat to secure the victory.
