Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cortland Wins 1-0 at Fredonia for Fifth Straight Victory

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Simone Neivel (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored her first goal of the season in the 41st minute, and the Cortland women's soccer team recorded its fourth consecutive shutout, as the Red Dragons earned a 1-0 victory on the road at Fredonia in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Wednesday evening. Cortland improves to 7-2-4 (5-0-1 SUNYAC), while Fredonia falls to 7-7 (2-4 SUNYAC).

Neivel scored on her only shot on goal of the game, while Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) continued an impressive run of performances by recording an assist. Cosenza has now assisted on each of Cortland's last five goals over a three-game stretch. Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) made seven saves in goal for her seventh shutout of the year.

Abby Szymkowiak stopped nine shots for Fredonia, while Katie Sellers had four shots on goal for the Blue Devils.

The teams traded chances in the opening minutes, with Haley Loscalzo (East Northport/Commack) and Piper Klammer (Mahopac) having shots saved by Szymkowiak inside the first seven minutes. Fredonia had two shots on target in the next five minutes, one by Sellers and one by Gabrielle Irwin, which Spendal was able to stop.

Cortland continued to fire away on the Fredonia goal over the coming minutes, and the Red Dragons were rewarded shortly before halftime when Cosenza sent a cross from down the right sideline to Neivel, who finished low into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Devils had the first two shots on target of the second half, with Spendal making a pair of saves in the opening 10 minutes. Fredonia continued to pressure, outshooting Cortland 14-7 in the second half. Spendal was called to action six time in the half, making all six saves.

Fredonia's final attempt to equalize came with the last kick of the ball, but Irwin's shot from outside the box sailed over the crossbar, as Cortland secured a second straight one-goal victory.
