CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland women's soccer team went ahead by two thanks to goals by
Julia DeTurris (Hicksville) and
Cam Stone (Ilion/Central Valley Academy), and held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting Oneonta in the battle of the Red Dragons on Wednesday evening on Holloway Field. Cortland moves to 3-2-4 (1-0-1 SUNYAC) on the year, while Oneonta falls to 1-6-1 (1-1-0 SUNYAC).
Â
DeTurris's goal was her second of the season, while Stone's goal was her first of the year.
Katie Diem (Fairport),
Simone Neivel (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), and
Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) provided assists for Cortland, while goalkeeper
Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) stopped two shots in goal.
Â
Oneonta's Kiera Dashnow scored a goal, while Kaiden Ring picked up an assist. Goaltender Bryanna Meehan made 10 saves in goal.Â
Â
Cortland controlled possession of the ball for the early part of the first half, and Meehan had to make a strong stop to deny
Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) on an effort from outside the box. Against the run of play, Oneonta had a great chance, as Dashnow cut inside the box and fired a curling right-footed shot just inches over the top of the crossbar.
Â
Cortland got on the board in the 39th minute, as Diem floated a cross on a free kick from the right side, which DeTurris was able to get her head on and flick into the top left corner of the net.
Â
Cortland pressed for another goal before halftime, but DeTurris had another shot attempt stopped just three minutes before halftime as the score remained 1-0 at the break.
Â
Cortland had a great opportunity in the 53rd minute, as Allen came down the left side and fired a shot towards the bottom right corner. Meehan was able to turn the initial shot aside, as well as a pair of follow-up attempts by
Haley Loscalzo (East Northport/Commack).
Â
Cortland got a second goal in the 68th minute to make it 2-0. Neivel's corner kick bounced around inside the box before Allen was able to knock it down to Stone, who fired a left-footed shot off the keeper and into the bottom right corner of the net.
Â
Oneonta pulled to within a goal in the 79th minute, as Ring slid to intercept a pass, and Dashnow hit a shot first time into the top right corner of the net from outside the penalty area.
Â
Cortland was able to control the ball for the final minutes, including displaying excellent possession near the corner flag with under five minutes remaining, to secure the win.
