Cortland Downs Plattsburgh 2-0 for Coach Axtell's 200th Win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team scored twice in the span of 121 seconds in the first half, earning a 2-0 victory on the road at Plattsburgh on Saturday. The win was head coach Heidi Axtell's 200th of her career and moves Cortland to 4-2-4 (2-0-1 SUNYAC) on the year. Meanwhile, Plattsburgh falls to 3-8-0 (2-1-0 SUNYAC).

Piper Klammer (Mahopac) netted her third goal of the season, while Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward-Melville) found the back of the net for the first time. Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) chipped in an assist. Goalkeeper Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) supervised her fourth shutout of the year, making two saves.

For Plattsburgh, Lauren Haley made three saves in goal, while the Cardinals had one shot on target apiece by Alexis Patrick and Kathy Peterson-Ross.

Cortland had a strong opening to the contest, firing five shots in the opening 25 minutes. Haley Loscalzo (East Northport/Commack) sent a shot off the crossbar in the 24th minute for one of the best chances for the Red Dragons.

Cortland struck first in the 28th minute, as Vuotto sent a through ball pass to Klammer, who deposited the ball into the net with a right-footed shot. Cortland wasted no time doubling its advantage, as Cosenza took advantage of an errant back pass by a Plattsburgh defender, knocking the bouncing ball past the Plattsburgh goalkeeper.

The Red Dragons held Plattsburgh without a shot on target in the opening half, leading by two into halftime.

The Cardinals were able to hold Cortland without a shot on target in the second half, as Cortland was happy to control the clock and possession without pushing for additional goals. Spendal was called to action in the 54th minute, making a save on Patrick's shot, and then again in the final four minutes on a shot by Peterson Ross.
