Red Dragons Use Third-Set Rally to Complete Sweep of Scranton

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland rallied from a 22-15 deficit in the third set and the Red Dragons completed a sweep of visiting Scranton, 25-16, 25-18, 25-23, in a non-league women's volleyball match.

Cortland posted its eighth straight win, all by 3-0 scores, to improve to 19-5 on the season. Scranton dropped to 13-11.

Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) led Cortland with 14 kills and just one error in 25 attempts for a .520 attack percentage. She had five kills in the first and third sets and four in the second. Pilkey also finished with seven digs, two aces and two blocks. Kyrah Wilbur (Syracuse/Baldwinsville) registered nine kills and one error in 27 attempts for a .296 attack percentage and added 14 digs and four blocks.

Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) and Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) each finished with six kills. Guedez had no errors in 16 attempts (.375) and finished with three blocks, one solo. Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) added four kills and no errors in eight attempts (.500) and led the Red Dragons with five blocks.

Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) and Samantha Rodriguez (Camarillo, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) finished with 17 and 14 assists, respectively, and each had two aces. Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) led Cortland with 17 digs and three aces.

Erin Keaveney led the visiting Royals with 11 kills and Kassidy Means had eight kills. Camryn Hoffman totaled 15 digs and Gianna Detorie handed out 19 assists.

Cortland finished the night with a .282 attack percentage, highlighted by a .556 mark in the first set with 15 kills and no errors in 27 attempts. Scranton hit .151 for the match, including .258 in the first set.

Cortland used a 10-1 run in the first set to change a 7-6 lead to 17-7. The Red Dragons appeared to be in control in the second set, leading 17-5, but Scranton fought back and got as close as four points three times, the last at 22-18. Cortland scored the final three points on kills by Jennifer Koestner (Syosset), Reilly and Pilkey.

Scranton controlled much of the third set. The Royals led 19-12 and still held a seven-point advantage at 22-15 after a Means kill. Reilly's kill gave Cortland a side out, and then while Martens was serving Cortland rattled off seven straight points to take a 23-22 lead. Martens started the run with two aces, followed by two Pilkey kills and another Martens ace. A Scranton error tied the set, and Guedez and Koestner combined for a block to give the Red Dragons the lead. Scranton briefly tied it at 23-23 on a kill from Means, but Cortland closed out the set and the match on a Pilkey kill and a Scranton error.

Cortland returns to SUNYAC play with matches Friday at Fredonia and Saturday at Buffalo State. Cortland (6-0), Morrisville (6-0) and Buffalo State (5-0) are all undefeated in league play this fall.
