Cortland Takes Down Buffalo State 7-0

CORTLAND, NY – The Cortland women's soccer team used an offensive outburst to pull away with a 7-0 victory over Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) finale on Holloway Field. Cortland has now won eight straight contests and moves to 10-2-4 (8-0-1 SUNYAC). Buffalo State falls to 8-9 (5-4 SUNYAC) with the defeat. Cortland also clinched the second seed in the SUNYAC Tournament, as well as a first round bye.

Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) and Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) each scored twice for the Red Dragons, with Cosenza also adding two assists. Piper Klammer (Mahopac), Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), and Devyn Kelly (Wappingers Falls/Beacon) scored the other Cortland goals.

Addy Williams made 13 saves in goal for the Bengals, while Eve DiCarlo had two shots on goal.

After a flurry of chances in the opening 10 minutes for the Red Dragons, Vuotto opened the scoring in the 11th minute, tapping in a rebound at the left post after Cosenza's initial shot was stopped by Williams.

Cortland wasted little time doubling its advantage, as Klammer got behind the Buffalo State back line and poked the ball inside the right post after Cam Stone (Ilion/Valley Central Academy) sent a lofted pass over the top of the defense.

Cosenza gave the Red Dragons a 3-0 lead in the 29th minute, dribbling around a defender and firing a shot into the upper left corner of the net. Allen scored in the 36th minute to make it 4-0, after Emily Forzaglia (Eastchester) controlled Julia Gagliano's (Massapequa) lofted pass over the top and played a through ball.

The Red Dragons held the four-goal advantage into halftime, with Cortland holding a 20-2 advantage in shot attempts in the half.

Cortland scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half, as Vuotto headed a shot into the net off of Allen's cross from the right sideline in the 50th minute, and Cosenza then netted from a tight angle on the end line, firing a shot into the top left corner of the net in the 53rd minute.

Kelly completed the scoring in the 77th minute, getting her head to Gigi Piscopiello's (Stony Point/North Rockland) cross from a corner kick.
