Cortland Sweeps Oswego in League Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team opened SUNYAC play with a three-set sweep of visiting Oswego, 25-10, 25-19, 25-12. The Red Dragons improved to 12-5 overall while extending their SUNYAC regular season-win streak to 28 matches dating back to 2021.
 
Cortland finished the night with a .276 attack percentage (39 kills, 12 errors in 98 attempts) while holding Oswego (10-9, 0-1 SUNYAC) to a .009 attack percentage (23 kills, 22 errors in 107 attempts).
 
Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) led a balanced attack with eight kills with only one error in 12 swings (.583) and added two blocks. Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) had seven kills with one error in 14 attempts (.429) and shared the team lead with four blocks.
 
Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) recorded six kills with one error in 18 attempts and had four blocks, five digs and two aces. Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) hit at a .571 clip (five kills, one error in seven attempts), while Erica Arroyo (Nesconset/Smithtown West) and Emalee Ballou (Eden) each added five kills.
 
Alyssa Rich (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) led Cortland with three aces and was second on the team with seven digs. Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) finished with 16 digs, Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) totaled 14 assists and Samantha Rodriguez (Camarillo, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) had 13 assists.
 
Oswego was led by Priscilla McReynolds with seven kills and Kalley Vugteveen with five kills.
 
Cortland used a 5-1 run to take an early 12-5 lead in the first set. Leading 15-8, Cortland finished the set by scoring 10 of the last 12 points. Cortland led 15-8 in the second set before Oswego made a push to get within 22-18. Following a Reilly kill, Oswego used a kill by Cara Simplicio to stay within four at 23-19. Cortland closed the set with kills by Reilly and Reese Chudoba (Hamburg). The Red Dragons never trailed in the third set, taking a 13-5 lead and never being threatened from that point.
 
Cortland will host Canton Saturday at 1 p.m. in a SUNYAC match on Senior Day. Canton is a member of the SUNYAC for the first time this year.
