YORK, PA. – Riley Buschert scored with 7:25 remaining in the fourth quarter to lift nationally eighth-ranked York College past ninth-ranked Cortland, 1-0, in non-league field hockey action in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Cortland (10-1) suffered its first loss of the season and was shut out for the first time since Oct. 1, 2022. York (8-3) was facing a nationally ranked team for the sixth time this season while Cortland played its fourth game against a ranked foe.
Cortland goalie
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) finished with six saves and York's Belle Fields stopped five shots on goal. York outshot Cortland by a narrow 10-9 margin and the Spartans earned nine penalty corners to three by the Red Dragons.
Buschert netted the game's lone goal when she dribbled left and, with the ball just resting on the edge of the circle, lifted a reverse-stick shot that floated over Morgan's head into the cage. Cortland had two chances in the final three minutes to knot the game but Fields turned aside shots by
Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) and
Sydney Reinisch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). The Red Dragons also had a strong scoring opportunity go by the boards late in the first half when York's Libby Wild made a defensive save on a Corrigan shot.
Cortland will host Marywood of Pennsylvania in a non-league game Saturday at 1 p.m.
