Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cortland Comes Up Just Short at Ithaca, 64-58

ITHACA, N.Y. - Logan Wendell scored 21 points as host Ithaca defeated Cortland, 64-58, in a men's basketball non-league contest.

The Bombers improved to 2-1 on the season and Cortland fell to 1-2. The Red Dragons return to action next Monday at 7 p.m. when they host the University of Rochester.

Joel Davis (Watertown) led Cortland with 12 points, 15 rebounds and two blocked shots. He made 6-of-10 shots from the field. Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) and Jaylen Warmack (Utica/Utica Notre Dame) each scored 10 points, Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) added eight points and Isaiah Austin (Albany) scored seven points. Warmack finished with seven rebounds and a team-high seven assists, Coston grabbed six rebounds and Arcuri finished with five rebounds.

Wendell shot 6-of-12 from the floor and 7-of-10 from the line for Ithaca. He also had six rebounds and three assists. Chris Leysath recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, hitting 8-of-12 shots from the field. Evan Cabral added eight points and a team-high three assists and Jose Padilla pulled down seven rebounds.

Neither team led by more than seven the entire game. Cortland was up 30-23 with 2:30 left in the first half and 34-29 at halftime. The teams stayed tight the entire second half. Cortland led 47-44 with 10:42 remaining after two Kendrick Wilson (Wheatley Heights/Moravia) free throws. Ithaca scored the next six points, however, and never trailed from that point.

The Red Dragons were still within one at 52-51 with 5:10 left, but Cabral's jumper, a Wendell free throw and a Leysath tip-in over the next two minutes put the Bombers up by six. Coston's 3-point play with 1:57 left made it a 57-54 game, but Wendell hit four free throws over the next 1:13 to push Ithaca's lead to seven. Cortland got no closer than four from that point.
