ITHACA, N.Y. –
Kayla Campbell (Franklin/Franklin Central) scored a game-high 19 points, including the tie-breaking bucket with 3:35 remaining, as Cortland defeated host Ithaca, 65-60, in a non-league women's basketball matchup.
Campbell finished 6-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and hit all four of her free throws for the Red Dragons (1-1). She added four rebounds and two assists.
Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds and led Cortland with four assists and four steals.
Sophie Bissaillon (East Greenbush/Columbia) chipped in with eight points and six rebounds and
Joleen Lusk (Cherry Valley/Cherry Valle-Springfield) ended with seven points, two assists and a team-best eight rebounds.
Also for Cortland,
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) totaled six points, four rebounds and three assists,
Jackie Funk (Penfield) had five points and four rebounds and
Bella Zingoni (Kings Park/Long Island Lutheran) finished with five points and two assists.
Ithaca (0-1) was led by Annabella Yorio with 18 points and three blocked shots along with seven rebounds. Junie Dickson finished with 14 points, four assists and three steals and Anya Watkins scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds, eight on the offensive glass. Emma Waite led the Bombers with five assists.
The back-and-forth contest started with Cortland taking an early 6-0 lead, but Ithaca leading 17-12 after one quarter. The Bombers pushed their lead to 22-12 early in the second, but Cortland raced back and took a 29-26 lead with 1:48 left in the half. Ithaca finished the period on a 6-2 push to go up 32-31 at the break.
Cortland was down 40-38 midway through the third but closed the quarter on a 13-2 run, featuring six points from Campbell and five by Bissaillon, to take a 52-42 lead into the final period. The Red Dragons led by 11 after Funk made a 3-pointer a minute into the fourth, but Ithaca scored 11 straight points over the next four minutes to tie the game at 57-57.
After Campbell's jumper gave Cortland the lead for good, Zingoni followed with a 3-pointer at the 2:24 mark to push the margin to five. Dickson answered for Ithaca with a 3-pointer on the next possession, but neither team scored again until Tillotson made a free throw with 22 seconds remaining. Ithaca missed a potential game-tying trey in the final 10 seconds and Tillotson controlled the rebound, was fouled and hit two foul shots to put the game away.
Cortland is off until Nov. 26 when the Red Dragons play a non-league game at Skidmore.
