Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#8 Cortland Falls 4-1 at Oswego

OSWEGO, NY – The nationally eighth-ranked Cortland women's hockey team fell on the road at Oswego by a final score of 4-1 on Friday afternoon. Cortland falls to 4-2 (2-2 SUNYAC), while Oswego improves to 5-0-1 (3-0-1 SUNYAC).

Kira Cook (Lake Ronkonkoma/Northwood School) scored Cortland's lone goal, with Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) and Taryn Raisanen (White Lake, MI/Trine University) providing assists. Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside U22) won 10-of-12 faceoffs for the Red Dragons.

Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) made 18 saves in 42:01 in goal, while Olivia Lumpiesz (Pinckney, MI/Biggby Coffee Hockey Club U19) stopped all 12 shots she faced in the final 17:59.

Mack Hull had a goal and an assist for the Lakers, while Helen Vandamme, Ericka Parenti, and Tessa Mucha each scored a goal. Lexi Levy stopped 27-of-28 shots for Oswego to earn the victory in goal.

Oswego got on the board first 6:28 into the opening period, as a pass from below the goal line made its way out front to Vandamme, who sent a wrist shot passed Goergen on Oswego's third shot of the game.

Just over two minutes later, Hull forced a turnover in the Cortland defensive zone, and slid a cross-ice pass to Parenti, who was able to squeeze a shot inside the right post before Goergen was able to get across.

The Red Dragons had a power play towards the end of the period, but couldn't capitalize as the score stayed 2-0 into the first intermission.

Cortland outshot Oswego slightly in the second period, 11-10, but was unable to get the puck past Levy in the second frame either. Meanwhile, Goergen stopped 10 shots in the second, including a breakaway save with her pad to keep the deficit at two. With under a minute remaining, Cortland took an interference penalty that carried over into the third period.

Oswego was able to net a power-play goal 50 seconds into the third period to make it 3-0, and then scored again just 2:01 into the period to extend the lead to four.

Cortland broke the shutout with about 15 minutes remaining, as Cook tapped home a rebound after Delacourt's shot from the left point was saved.

The Red Dragons went on the power play again with under eight minutes remaining looking to reduce the deficit further. A shot by Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) hit off the crossbar, and the Red Dragons were unable to put the puck into the net as a scrum ensued.

Shortly after the expiration of the penalty, Meggan Cramer (Cicero/Northwood School) saw her shot on the breakaway ring off the inside of the pipe and stay out. Seconds later, Lumpiesz made a strong save to deny a 2-on-1 opportunity at the other end for Oswego and keep the score at 4-1.

Cortland pressed for a foothold back into the game, but the Lakers held firm to secure the win.
