ELMIRA, NY - The nationally 11th-ranked Cortland women's hockey team earned a 3-0 shutout on the road at nationally seventh-ranked Elmira on Tuesday evening. The Red Dragons have now defeated two top-10 teams this year and improve to 5-2 on the season, while Elmira falls to 6-3.
Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leasode U22), Grace Karakas (Duluth, MN/Duluth East), and Meggan Cramer (Cicero/Northwood School) each scored a goal for Cortland. Goaltender Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie HS) stopped 34 shots for the shutout.
Leonie Kuehberger made 33 saves for Elmira, allowing just two goals.Â
The first period was evenly matched, with both goalies remaining perfect into the intermission. Goergen made 12 saves for Cortland, while Kuehberger stopped all 10 shots she faced.Â
Cortland got on the board first early in the second period, as Mahoney found the back of the net off of assists from Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U19) and Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound 19UAAA).Â
The Red Dragons held the one-goal advantage into the second intermission, with Goergen making 11 more saves.Â
Just past the midway point of the third period, Karakas doubled the Cortland lead, with assists credited to Josselyn Drayson (Dallas, TX/Dallas Stars Elite) and McKenzie Brown (Peru/Lovell Academy).Â
Cortland kept Elmira at bay as the Soaring Eagles pressed to find the back of the net over the following minutes. With just 14 seconds remaining, Cramer sealed the win with an empty-net goal, assisted by Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19) and Natalie O'Brien (Lockport/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19).
