CORTLAND, NY – Sydney Reinisch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored the game-winning goal with 4:05 remaining in the fourth quarter, and the nationally eighth-ranked Cortland field hockey team won its third straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title with a 2-1 victory over nationally 21st-ranked New Paltz in the SUNYAC Finals on Saturday at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 17-1 on the year, while New Paltz falls to 14-6.
With the victory, Cortland earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament, with seedings to be announced on Sunday evening at 9:30 p.m.
Reinisch's goal was her fourth of the season, while
Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) had a goal and an assist for the Red Dragons.
Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) also provided an assist for Cortland, while goalkeeper
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made eight saves in goal.
Hannah Ackerman scored New Paltz's lone goal, while Miranda Britton provided an assist. Gail Comiskey stopped five shots in goal for the Hawks.
Morgan was called to action just over a minute into the first quarter, as the junior made a point-blank save from New Paltz's top scorer Rachel Tama.
Jamie Snyder (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) had a shot saved down at the other end less than a minute later.
Cortland got on the board first following a penalty corner with 8:15 remaining in the period, Snyder inserted the corner to Adams, who passed over to Corrigan, before Corrigan blasted a shot from the right side into the net.
New Paltz responded quickly off of a penalty corner of its own less than 40 seconds later, as Ackerman blasted a shot through a screen after the insert from Britton.
The game remained tied until Reinisch's game winner in the fourth quarter, as Morgan made three saves in the second quarter, and two more saves in the third quarter with the game still knotted up.
With under nine minutes remaining, Morgan made a strong save to deny an opportunity for New Paltz.
Reinisch's game-winning goal came off a corner, as the insert from Snyder came out to Corrigan, who fed a pass to the left side over to Reinisch, who blasted a shot past Comiskey to secure the victory.
Reinisch, Morgan, Corrigan and
Keirra Ettere were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances in the semifinals and finals, while Corrigan was also selected as the MVP.
