Red Dragons Drop Tight Battle at Geneseo, 59-52

GENESEO, N.Y. – Geneseo's Kerry Dennin scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Knights defeated visiting Cortland, 59-52, in a SUNYAC women's basketball contest.

Cortland (16-7, 12-4 SUNYAC), despite the loss, remains in second place in the SUNYAC standings, although now only a half game ahead of Geneseo (17-7, 12-5 SUNYAC). The Red Dragons will finish either second or third in the league standings depending on the outcome of their final two regular-season conference games at home next Friday and Saturday versus Buffalo State and Fredonia as well as Geneseo's final league game at Brockport next Saturday.

Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) led Cortland with 15 points and four assists and also secured five rebounds. Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and matched her career high with 15 rebounds, and Kaeli McAnally (Islip) tallied 10 points and had three steals.

In addition to Dennin's 15 points, Hannah Stockman finished with 13 points and Maggie McGrane scored 11 points for the Knights. Stockman hit 5-of-6 shots, including 3-of-4 3-pointers. Mackenzie Reigle contributed seven points, six rebounds and seven assists to the winning cause.

The teams finished close in shooting percentage - Cortland at 38 percent and Geneseo at 39 percent. The Red Dragons, however, made only 4-of-23 3-pointers compared to Geneseo's 6-of-17 accuracy.

The first half featured seven ties and seven lead changes. Cortland led by five late in the first quarter and 15-14 entering the second quarter, and Geneseo took a 27-23 halftime lead after scoring the final six points of the period. Geneseo led the entire second half. The Knights built a 37-25 lead less than five minutes into the third quarter. Cortland got back to within three late in the quarter and was down by five twice in the final two minutes of the game. Geneseo made 2-of-4 free throws in the final 12 seconds to wrap up the victory.
