Big Second Period Fuels 5-1 Victory at Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Cortland men's hockey team cruised to a 5-1 victory at Brockport in SUNYAC action Saturday night. With the victory the Red Dragons improve to 13-7-2 (8-4-1 SUNYAC) and the Golden Eagles fall to 6-13-3 (3-9-1 SUNYAC).

Junior Anthony Bernardo (Hauppauge/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) and sophomore Stephen Kyrkostas (Selden/Johnstown Tomahawks) led the Red Dragon offense, tallying one goal and one assist each in the effort. Seniors Sutter Donegan (Cicero/Buffalo Jr. Sabres), Jona Hildreth (Williamsville/Walpole Express) and Cameron Knowlton (Kenai, AK/Charlotte Rush) all netted one for the Red Dragons. Sam Nichols (North Tonawanda/Islanders Hockey Club) collected two assists on the night and Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Rey, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) allowed just one goal and registered 39 saves.

Freshman Schulyer Flansburg was the lone goal scorer for the Golden Eagles, with sophomores Chase Maxwell and Manny Sanchez each picking up an assist.

Kyrkostas gave the Red Dragons the lead in the first period, firing a shot into the top right corner off a feed from Nichols.

The Red Dragons emerged from the first intermission a man down, but Donegan scored Cortland's second shorthanded goal of the season 44 seconds into the second frame to give the away side a 2-0 lead. Just over two minutes later Knowlton extended the lead on a redirect in front of the goal off of a feed from Bernardo. Bernardo scored one of his own on the power play with 14 minutes to go in the second period, the third Red Dragon goal in 5:16 of game time. Flansburg got one back for Brockport with just under two minutes remaining before the second intermission, but Cortland captain Hildreth brought the lead back to four 1:05 before the intermission horn sounded.

Brockport started the final period up a man but were unable to produce a goal as both teams were held scoreless in the third.
