PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Cortland outscored Plattsburgh in the second quarter, 19-2, on the way to a 64-48 victory over the host Cardinals in a SUNYAC women's basketball matchup.
Cortland (16-5, 12-2 SUNYAC) has secured a spot in the six-team SUNYAC playoffs with four regular-season games remaining. The Red Dragons are in second place in the league, a game behind New Paltz (13-1) and three games ahead of third-place Geneseo (10-5). Cortland plays at Brockport and Geneseo next Friday and Saturday.
Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) led Cortland with 13 points and eight rebounds. She made three 3-pointers.
Lily Woodis (Dewittville/Chautauqua Lake) made two treys and finished with 12 points and four rebounds and
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) tallied nine points.
Abby Wilkinson (Cato/Bishop Grimes) and
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) led the Red Dragons with four assists each and McAnally also added a team-high three steals.
Plattsburgh (7-13, 4-10 SUNYAC) featured three double-figure scorers. Imani Walcott scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Payton Couture netted 11 points and had three assists, while Selma Deisz scored 10 points.
Cortland led 16-10 after the first quarter after a Tillotson 3-pointer in the final 35 seconds. Neither team scored in the first three and a half minutes of the second quarter before Cortland rattled off seven straight points - three by Morano and four by
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) - to take a 23-10 lead with 4:39 left. Plattsburgh's lone points of the period came via a Bri Brousseau layup with 4:08 left. Cortland scored the last 12 points of the quarter, starting with 3-pointers from Tillotson and
Jackie Funk (Penfield), followed by baskets from Woodis, Funk, and Woodis again, and the Red Dragons led 35-12 at halftime.
Cortland's lead varied from 20 to 32 points in the third quarter. Plattsburgh got as close as 14 points with 2:14 left in the game.
