Cortland Late Rally Not Enough in 84-80 Loss at Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Cortland cut a 16-point deficit to four in the final five minutes but couldn't complete the comeback and the Red Dragons lost at Brockport, 84-80, in a SUNYAC women's basketball contest.
 
Cortland fell to 16-6 overall and remains in second place in the SUNYAC standings with a 12-3 record. Brockport improved to 12-11 overall and is in sixth place in the league with an 8-8 mark.
 
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) led Cortland with 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals. She finished 7-for-15 from the field and 7-of-10 from the foul line. Abby Wilkinson (Cato/Bishop Grimes) and Kaeli McAnally (Islip) scored 13 points apiece and Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) tallied 12 points. McAnally led the Red Dragons with five assists, shared the team lead with three steals and added six rebounds. Morano totaled four assists and five rebounds. Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) ended with four assists.
 
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste registered 24 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks to lead Brockport. Zoe Zutes finished with 17 points, three blocks and five rebounds and Anna Lee scored 14 points. Zutes made 4-of-6 shots from the 3-point arc and Jean-Baptiste was 3-of-6 from 3-point range as Brockport shot 55 percent (11-of-20) from the arc as a team, including 67 percent (6-of-9) in the first half.
 
Brockport led by 10 points with four minutes left in the first quarter and 24-18 at the end of the period. The Golden Eagles ran their lead to 18 points, 43-25, with 3:28 left in the half and took a 13-point lead, 46-33, into the locker room at halftime.
 
The hosts maintained a lead of at least 11 points the entire third quarter and were up 76-60 at the midway point of the fourth. Cortland drew back to within single digits, 78-69, on a Morano 3-point play with 3:15 left and was down 81-75 after Tillotson hit a 3-pointer with just under a minute remaining. Brockport's Mandy Brink made one free throw with 49 seconds left and Morano hit a 3-pointer with 41 seconds remaining to cut the Golden Eagles' lead to four.
 
Brockport missed a layup with 37 seconds left but Cortland missed a 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining. Brink's two foul shots gave the Golden Eagles an 83-78 lead. McAnally hit a layup with 15 seconds left to bring it back to a four-point margin. McAnally then recorded a steal with nine seconds left but Cortland missed a 3-pointer and Brockport controlled the rebound as the clock expired.
 
Cortland plays at Geneseo Saturday at 2 p.m.
