Early Lead Doesn't Hold Up in Setback at #23 St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The nationally 23rd-ranked St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team scored seven consecutive goals to erase an early deficit and defeated Cortland, 13-6, in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon at Growney Stadium. The Red Dragons dropped to 2-4 on the season with all four setbacks coming against ranked opponents.

Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) led Cortland with three goals and five draw controls. Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) tallied a goal and an assist, Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) netted a goal and Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) scored a goal and collected two ground balls.

Goalie Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) made eight saves for the Red Dragons. Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) scooped up three ground balls, while Lexi Caron (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) caused two turnovers.

Sydney Carpenter and Kaley Griffin each netted four goals to pace the St. John Fisher (2-4) offense. Hanna Kumpf scored three goals, Cara Landry and Emily DeVoe each contributed a goal and Mary Fiorentino recorded four assists.

Goalie Kaylee Gadol turned aside seven shots. Maddie Lowney secured a game-high eight draws. Carpenter added three draws, three ground balls and two caused turnovers, Shannon Foster finished with three draws and two ground balls and Ella Stewart chipped in with two caused turnovers and two draws.

The Red Dragons raced out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter as Hoeffner netted all three of her goals during the 15 minutes. The Cardinals cut the Cortland lead to 4-3 with the first two goals of the second quarter before Iapoce made it a 5-3 score at the 5:31 mark of the period. Two goals from Carpenter and a goal from Kumpf in the last three minutes before half time put the Cardinals ahead for good at 6-5.

St. John Fisher pushed the lead to 10-5 after outscoring Cortland, 4-0, in the third quarter. Janis made it a 10-6 game with an early free-position goal in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals tallied the game's final three goals for the 13-6 final.

The Red Dragons return to action on Saturday, hosting Fredonia at 12:30 p.m. in their SUNYAC opener.
