CORTLAND, N.Y. – Ten different players scored goals as the Cortland women's lacrosse team opened SUNYAC play with a commanding 20-3 victory versus Fredonia Saturday afternoon at a cold and snowy Grady Field. The Red Dragons improved to 3-4 overall. The Blue Devils dropped to 4-4 and 0-1.
Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) and
Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) each tallied four goals and two assists for Cortland.
Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) registered a game-high eight points on two goals and a career-best six assists.
Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) and
Brooke Elizalde (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) picked up two goals and an assist apiece with Elizalde's goals being the first of her career.
Gwen Laukaitis (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) netted her first two goals of the season for the Red Dragons.
Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) chipped in with a goal and an assist,
Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) and
Chelsey Weber (Holtsville/Sachem East) each scored a goal,
Natalie Bennett (Latham/Shaker) tallied her first career goal, and
Mackenzie Beck (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) contributed an assist.
Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) started in goal for Cortland, making one save in the opening half before giving way to
Trinity Parks (Binghamton/Chenango Forks), who stopped two shots over the final 30 minutes.
Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) collected five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Julie Kadletz (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) finished with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Hoeffner added seven draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers, Melillo collected three ground balls and caused two turnovers and
Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) won four draws.
Audrey Brown, Leah Kunisch and Sydney Buchko each netted goals for Fredonia, while Cailin Karalus recorded an assist. Goalie Ashleigh Manns stopped seven shots. Brown secured four draws, Buchko registered four ground balls and Ella Forrest finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Cortland took control of the game early, building a 7-0 lead after the first quarter as Hoeffner scored three times and Cashman notched a pair of goals. Brown opened the scoring in the second quarter, but the Red Dragons ran together eight consecutive goals from eight different players to end the half with a 15-1 advantage.
Cortland netted the two lone goals of the third quarter, and the teams split a pair of goals in the fourth quarter for the 20-3 final.
