Janis Hits 100 Career Points as Cortland Rolls Over Plattsburgh, 22-2

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) recorded five first-half assists to become the 54th Red Dragon to reach 100 career points (41-61-102) as the Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated Plattsburgh, 22-2, Wednesday afternoon at Grady Field in SUNYAC action.

Thirteen different players recorded at least one point for the Red Dragons (4-4, 2-0 SUNYAC), including 12 who scored goals. Mackenzie Beck (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) led the way with four goals and an assist. Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) and Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) each netted three goals. Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) tallied two goals and two assists, Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) scored twice, and Bridie McGuire (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) picked up the first two goals of her career.

Gwen Laukaitis (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) recorded a goal and an assist, while Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland), Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead), Chelsey Weber (Holtsville/Sachem East) and Isabella Dembinski (Holbrook/Sachem East) each scored a goal for the Red Dragons.

Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) started in goal for Cortland, making two saves in the opening 30 minutes. Trinity Parks (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) took over in the second half and stopped three shots. Melillo added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Hoeffner won seven of Cortland's 22 draw controls.

Cynthia Barnosky scored both of the goals for the Cardinals (1-6, 0-1 SUNYAC). Plattsburgh played all three of its goalies in the game. Hannah Lowder earned the start and stopped one shot in 4:03. Lilla Nease stepped in and turned aside seven shots in 40:57 before Jess Loch played the final 15 minutes.

Sloane Carr scooped up four ground balls, Sam Lombardi and Lillian Gilroy secured two ground balls apiece and Nicole Resnick caused two turnovers for the Cardinals.

Cortland put the game away early, building a 10-1 lead after the first quarter as Cashman and Hoeffner each tallied her three goals during the opening 15 minutes. Janis collected four of her assists in the quarter, including one on her 100th career point on Hoeffner's goal at the 9:29 mark.

The Red Dragons took a 13-1 lead into the half on goals from Melillo, Dembinski and Beck. The advantage grew to 16-1 just past the midway point of the third quarter before Barnosky stopped Cortland's 10-goal run with a free-position goal at 4:06. Beck closed the quarter with her second goal of the game, and the Red Dragons added five fourth-quarter goals for the 22-2 final.
