Cortland Opens Conference Action with a 13-6 Win vs. Geneseo

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team held Geneseo scoreless for a 30 minute, three second stretch spanning the first to third quarters in earning a 13-6 victory in the teams' SUNYAC openers Saturday afternoon at a chilly Grady Field. The Red Dragons improved to 4-2 overall, while the Knights fell to 5-4.

Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) tallied a game-high five points on three goals and two assists to lead the Cortland offense. Klay Stuver (Fairport) also netted three goals. Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) each scored twice. Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) recorded a goal and an assist, Matt Franzoni (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) and Ryan Eccles (Syracuse/Corcoran) netted one goal apiece, and Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) and Ryan Smith (East Islip) chipped in with an assist.

Goalie Travis Wagner (Penfield) registered 11 saves and three ground balls. Aidan McHugh (Maine/Maine-Endwell) won eight faceoffs. Christian Lembo (Farmingdale) secured seven ground balls, Conner Gallagher (Northport) finished with four ground balls and four caused turnovers and Alex Thrasher (Vestal) collected four ground balls.

Jimmy Atkinson paced Geneseo with two goals. William McCumiskey tallied a goal and an assist, Robert Boniello, Brady Sullivan and Kevin Mouton each scored a goal. Riley Henselder picked up two assists, and Ian Kane recorded an assist.

Goalie Andrew Tittmann turned aside 16 shots. BB Syrop won 12-of-19 faceoffs. Sean Elliott picked up five ground balls, Michael Corwin ended with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Trevor Bollinger contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Red Dragons opened a 4-2 lead after the first quarter of play and pushed the lead to 7-2 at the half as Cortland held Geneseo scoreless in the second quarter. The lead grew to 11-2 late in the third quarter as Stuver scored twice and Rothman and Eccles each netted a goal. The Knights ended their scoreless drought on Mouton's man-up goal at the 51-second mark, but Stoecker closed the quarter with 1.1 seconds on the clock with his first goal to give Cortland a commanding 12-3 lead. The Knights outscored Cortland, 3-1, in the fourth quarter to make the final 13-6.
