Cortland Drops Non-Conference Game at #4 RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The nationally fourth-ranked RIT men's lacrosse team scored nine of the game's last 12 goals to break away from a third-quarter tie in earning a 20-14 victory in non-conference action Wednesday night. The Red Dragons dropped to 4-3 with the setback. The Tigers improved to 9-1.

Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) and Klay Stuver (Fairport) paced the Cortland offense with four goals apiece with Scanlon adding an assist. Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) netted three goals, and Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded two goals and an assist.

Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) tallied a goal and an assist, and Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover), Nathan Nagengast (Bay SHore) and Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) each collected an assist.

Goalie Travis Wagner (Penfield) registered 16 saves for the Red Dragons. Aidan McHugh (Maine/Maine-Endwell) won 14 faceoffs, Alex Thrasher (Vestal) finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, Conner Gallagher (Northport) secured four ground balls and Macknik and Christian Lembo (Farmingdale) each scooped up three ground balls.

Cliiford Gaston led RIT with eight points on six goals and two assists. Ethan Harkins scored four goals. Luke Pilcher tallied three goals and three assists, Jake Erickson recorded three goals and two assists and Dylan Bruno finished with three goals and an assist. Seth Grottenthaler netted a goal, John Mozrall collected three assists and Mike Grace and Ethan Spillane picked up one assist.

Kyle Burbank started in goal for the Tigers, making five saves in the first half. Kyle Gaffey played the second half, turning aside six shots. Allyn French won 15-of-26 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls. Grace added six ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Caiden Perry collected four ground balls.

RIT opened a 5-3 lead after the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 11-5 at the half. The Red Dragons rallied for six consecutive goals to open the third quarter, two each from Rothman and Scanlon, to tie the game at 11-11 at the 6:39 mark. RIT closed the quarter by scoring four of the next five goals and took a 15-12 lead into the final 15 minutes of play. The Tigers then outscored Cortland, 5-2, in the fourth quarter to secure the 20-14 victory.
