ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Cortland baseball team began State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a sweep at Oneonta on Monday. The Red Dragons (8-8-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) won the opener, 4-1, as
Luis Misla (Tampa, FL/Riverview) threw a complete-game three-hitter with 13 strikeouts. Cortland won the nightcap, 18-6, after rallying from a 6-4 deficit in the sixth inning. The game was called after eight innings due to the SUNYAC's 10-run rule.
Cortland and Oneonta will complete their three-game series Tuesday at noon at Oneonta.
Cortland 4, Oneonta 1
Misla went the distance for his first win of the season. He allowed three hits and two walks and struck out 13. The lone run he allowed came on a Joey Dwyer solo homer in the bottom of the second. Dwyer finished 2-for-4 and Alex Wurster was 1-for-3 for the hosts.
Cortland scored twice in the top of the first on a
Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) RBI single and a
Mat Bruno (Rye) steal of home on a first-and-third double steal. The game remained 2-1 until the top of the ninth when
Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run and another run scored on a wild pitch.
Bonacci finished 3-for-4 with a triple, double and walk to account for three of Cortland's four hits. Oneonta starter Sean Liquori gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits in five innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
Cortland 18, Oneonta 6 (8 inn.)
Cortland scored eight runs in the top of the sixth to come back from a 6-4 deficit. The guests added a run in the seventh and five in the eighth to create the margin necessary for the 10-run rule to take effect.
Cortland finished with 16 hits.
Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and three runs scored. Bruno ended 2-for-5 with a double, walk and five RBI,
Jon Munoz (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs, Bonacci was 2-for-5 with a double, walk, two RBI and four runs, and
Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas) was 2-for-6 with two RBI.
Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) had a key two-out, two-run single that tied the game at 6-6 in the sixth, and Cortland continued the two-out rally for six more runs, including a Bruno three-run double. Mackenzie hit a solo homer in the eighth.
Zack Zarrilli (Farmingdale), Cortland's three reliever, earned the win after retiring all five batters he faced, three by strikeout, after entering with one out and two on in the fourth in the middle of an Oneonta four-run inning. Zarrilli was the pitcher of record when Cortland took the lead in the sixth.
Matthew Nochowitz (Glen Head/North Shore) went the final three innings for the save. he gave up two hits, no walks and no runs and fanned one batter.
Liquori and Anthony Foglia each went 2-for-4 for Oneonta, with Foglia driving in two runs. Kyle Roper suffered the loss as Oneonta's first reliever.
