CORTLAND, N.Y. – Lily Cody scored two minutes into overtime to lift nationally 25th-ranked Ithaca to an 11-10 victory over 23rd-ranked Cortland Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Grady Field. The Red Dragons dropped to 2-1 with the setback. The Bombers improved to 3-0.
Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) paced the Cortland offense with a game-high five goals.
Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) tallied three goals and an assist, and
Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) and
Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) each scored a goal.
Goalie
Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) stopped nine shots for the Red Dragons. Hoeffner added six draw controls and three ground balls.
Julie Kadletz (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) collected five ground balls and caused three turnovers, while
Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) caused three turnovers.
Maizy Veitch led Ithaca with three goals and an assist. Cody, Lexi Kellish and Chloe Nordyke each netted two goals, Maddie Hall and Sydney Phillips recorded a goal and an assist and Caroline Wise picked up two assists.
Goalie Lexi Held turned aside 15 shots for the Bombers. Wise secured a game-high eight draws. Cody added three caused turnovers and three draws, and Phoebe Hosford and Liney Dutchyshyn each collected three ground balls.
The teams were even at 2-2 after the first quarter, and Ithaca held a 7-6 lead at the break with each team putting together a three-goal run during the second quarter. Cashman and Kellish traded goals in the third quarter as the Bombers took an 8-7 advantage into the final 15 minutes of regulation. The lead grew to 10-7 as Phillips and Hall netted early goals in the quarter. The Red Dragons rallied for three consecutive goals, two by Iapoce and one from Cashman, to pull even at 10-10 with 4:34 left in the quarter.
Ithaca won the following draw, and the Bomber possession eventually led to a two-minute non-releasable yellow card against Cortland with 2:50 on the clock. Morgan made a save on the free-position shot after the card, but the Red Dragons turned the ball back over to Ithaca. The Bombers were awarded another free position with just over a minute remaining but shot high giving Cortland possession. After a successful clear, Cashman worked for a shot on the right side of the cage, but Held made the save with 12 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
Ithaca won the opening draw in the extra time and immediately turned the ball over. On its clear attempt, Cortland also committed a turnover. The Bombers worked a good clear, and Cody made a move toward the cage and scored the game winner with a low shot for the 11-10 final.
The game featured 10 cards with Cortland being issued nine in the contest, including four yellow cards and five green cards.
