#23 Cortland Falls to #3 William Smith, 14-5

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally third-ranked William Smith women's lacrosse team outscored 23rd-ranked Cortland, 8-3, in the second half in earning a 14-5 non-conference victory in windy and wet conditions Saturday afternoon at Grady Field. The Red Dragons dropped to 2-2 on the season, while the Herons improved to 4-0.

Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) led Cortland with a goal and two assists. Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland), Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) each netted a goal. Isabella Dembinski (Holbrook/Sachem East) scored her first career goal, and Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) picked up an assist.

Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) started in goal for the Red Dragons, making seven saves across three quarters. Trinity Parks (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) stopped two shots over the final 15 minutes in her first collegiate action. Julie Kadletz (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Iapoce added three caused turnovers, Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) contributed three caused turnovers and two ground balls, Morgan Brace (Brewster) caused two turnovers and Hoeffner secured five draw controls.

Maddie Montgomery paced the William Smith offense with four goals and an assist, while Hannah Evans also netted four goals. Molly Davis and Taryn Luzi each scored twice, Emily Griffin tallied a goal and an assist, Natalie Daniels scored a goal and Allie McGinty recorded five assists.

Goalie Maura Smeader was forced to make just three saves for the Herons. Montgomery added three draws, two ground balls and two caused turnovers to her stat line. Daniels won six draws, Janey Sypeck finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers and McGinty caused two turnovers.
