Cortland Easily Wins Battle of Red Dragons, 23-5

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Cortland women's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-2 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 23-5 victory at Oneonta Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The visiting Red Dragons improved to 8-4 overall and 5-0 in the conference, while the host Red Dragons dropped to 3-8 and 1-3.

Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) matched her career high with eight points on a career-best seven goals and one assist to lead the Cortland offense. Six of Cashman's goals came in the opening half. Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) equaled her career high with five goals all in the opening 30 minutes of play.

Mackenzie Beck (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) netted three goals for Cortland. Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) recorded two goals and an assist, and Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) tallied six points on a goal and five assists. Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland), Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) and Lauren McCulloch (Loudonville/Shaker) each contributed a goal and an assist, while Chelsey Weber (Holtsville/Sachem East) and Isabella Dembinski (Holbrook/Sachem East) netted one goal apiece.

Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) started in goal for Cortland, making two saves in the first half. Trinity Parks (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) stopped one shot in the second half. Hoeffner recorded 14 draw controls and caused two turnovers, and Melillo scooped up three ground balls.

Cassidy Moore led Oneonta with three goals and three draws. Marissa Evans tallied a goal and two assists, Mason Benvenuto scored a goal and Elizabeth Doherty collected an assist.

Courtney Gallagher started in goal and registered five saves in the first quarter. Julia Hawkins turned aside seven shots over the final three quarters. Evans secured two draws, and Antonina Buscemi and Gallagher each scooped up two ground balls.

The visiting Red Dragons took control of the game early, scoring the first 10 goals in just eight minutes, 35 seconds. Cashman scored four times and Hoeffner added three goals during the run. Leading, 11-2, after the first quarter, Cortland netted the first three goals of the second quarter before the teams traded goals to end the first half with Cortland holding a 15-3 lead.

The visiting Red Dragons outscored the hosts, 5-0, in the third quarter to boost their lead to 20-3. Five different players scored for Cortland during the 15 minutes. Cortland pushed its lead to 23-4 in the fourth quarter before Moore closed the scoring for the 23-5 final.
