Rogers Reaches 200 Career Wins in 9-5 Victory at Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team scored the last five goals of the game in earning a 9-5 victory at Potsdam in SUNYAC play Saturday afternoon giving head coach Lelan Rogers his 200th career win. Rogers' overall record now stands at 200-63 spanning stints at Ohio Wesleyan, Utica and Cortland.

Klay Stuver (Fairport) scored a game-high five goals to lead Cortland (8-3, 4-0 SUNYAC). Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough), Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) and Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) each tallied a goal and an assist. Josh Michel (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) netted a goal, Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) picked up three assists and Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) contributed an assist.

Goalie Travis Wagner (Penfield) turned aside 11 shots and scooped up three ground balls for the Red Dragons. Alex Thrasher (Vestal) collected six ground balls and caused two turnovers, and Jimmy Addonizio (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) caused two turnovers. Rothman added four ground balls, while Scanlon, Christian Lembo (Farmingdale) and Conner Gallagher (Northport) each secured three ground balls.

Peyton Walsh scored a pair of goals to pace Potsdam (6-5, 1-3 SUNYAC). Owen Walsh finished with a goal and an assist, Cobie Cree and Drew Rose each netted a goal and Morgan Fox chipped in with an assist.

Goalie Saka Thompson registered 14 saves for the Bears. Drew Costello won 10-of-16 faceoffs. Ben Lagoner finished with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, and Jack Mccandless collected three ground balls.

The largest lead for either team before the fourth-quarter surge was two goals when Potsdam held a 3-1 advantage after the first quarter. Cortland sent the game into halftime tied at 3-3 as Scanlon and Stuver each scored a second-quarter goal. Rose and Michel traded goals just under six minutes apart in the third quarter, and the game was even at 4-4 through 45 minutes of play.

Owen Walsh gave the Bears back the lead at 5-4 with his goal 35 seconds into the fourth quarter. Stuver tied the game 42 seconds later before Kavanagh struck for what would be the game winner at the 11:08 mark. Stuver then netted back-to-back goals, the first on a man-up situation, and Stoecker capped the scoring at 5:33 for the 9-5 final.
