Cortland Falls, 12-11, at Ithaca in Non-Conference Play

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team dropped a tightly contested non-conference game at Ithaca, 12-11, Wednesday night. The Red Dragons fell to 8-4 on the season, while the Bombers improved to 7-7.

Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) led Cortland with three goals. Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) and Ryan Eccles (Syracuse/Corcoran) each netted two goals. Klay Stuver (Fairport) recorded a goal and an assist, Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover), Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Bobby Kratochvil (Setauket/Ward Melville) each netted a goal and Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) contributed three assists.

Goalie Travis Wagner (Penfield) made nine saves for the Red Dragons. Alex Thrasher (Vestal) caused three turnovers and scooped up two ground balls. Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) finished with two ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Stoecker added four ground balls.

John Sramac scored a game-high four goals for Ithaca. Sam Baker tallied three goals, and Charlie Niebuhr recorded two goals and an assist. Hunter Wallace, Jack Giannuzzi and Andrew Benjamin each scored a goal, Kyle Proctor picked up three assists and Graham Brady and Ethan Adrid chipped in with an assist.

Goalie Cole Corrigan stopped seven shots for the Bombers. Chris Sohl won 18-of-23 faceoffs and secured seven ground balls. Wallace added six ground balls, and Jared Sedlock collected five ground balls.

In a game in which the largest lead for either team was two goals, the outcome came down to the fourth quarter. Ithaca held a 9-8 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes of play. Scanlon and Yancey sandwiched goals around a Sramac man-up goal, and the game was tied at 10-10 with 9:48 to play.

Wallace and Giannuzzi netted back-to-back goals to put the Bombers ahead, 12-10, late in the game. Macknik caused a turnover with 38 seconds on the clock and Scanlon scored at the 15-second mark to make it a one-goal game. Ithaca, however, won the ensuing faceoff and ran out the clock for the 12-11 victory.
