FREDONIA, N.Y. -
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and
Kim Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) each tossed shutouts as Cortland swept host Fredonia, 8-0 and 4-0, in a SUNYAC softball doubleheader. The second game was called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Cortland pushed its record to 17-5 overall and 7-3 in the SUNYAC with the victories. The Red Dragons will play a doubleheader at Buffalo State on Saturday at noon.
Cortland 8, Fredonia 0 (5 inn.)
Barry threw a two-hit shutout in the opener with one strikeout and one walk to improve to 11-1 on the season. Cortland took advantage of four Fredonia errors in the second inning to score six unearned runs. The Red Dragons added two in the fifth to go up by eight and retired the Blue Devils in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) and
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) each finished 2-for-3. Scotto drove in two runs and McAnally scored twice.
Tori Reich (Cornwall) went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI. For Fredonia, Emily Chelius gave up eight runs, two earned, in five innings. She allowed seven hits and four walks and struck out four. Chelius and Allie Wandell each finished 1-for-2 at the plate.
Cortland's six-run rally in the second started with a McAnally one-out single and a
Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead) walk.
Lainie Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) reached on an error on a sac bunt to score McAnally, and Reich also was safe on an error during a sac bunt, with Pendergast scoring to make it 2-0. With two outs, Scotto hit a two-run single to push the lead to 4-0. Cortland added two more runs on a dropped fly ball three batters later. The Red Dragons' final two runs resulted from a Reich two-run single in the fifth.
Barry allowed a Chelius two-out double in the first but got a groundout to end the inning. The Blue Devils had a runner reach third in the second inning on a walk, sac bunt and groundout before a flyout stopped the threat.
Cortland 4, Fredonia 0
Westenberg ran her season record to 6-2 with a three-hit shutout. She struck out 11 batters and walked two over seven innings. Fredonia's Vanessa Galbraith matched zeroes with Westenberg for the first four innings before giving up a run in the fifth. Cortland broke the game open with three runs in the seventh. Galbraith allowed nine hits and three walks and fanned three batters in the complete-game effort.
Gina Meyers (Liverpool) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Scotto finished 2-for-3 with a double, sac fly and two RBI. Barry drove in two runs with a two-run homer and finished 1-for-3 with a walk, while Ornstein went 1-for-2 with a walk. Chelius, Wandell and Alyssa Santiago each finished 1-for-3 for Fredonia (8-16, 3-5 SUNYAC).
Cortland put together a two-out rally to score in the fifth. Meyers singled and went to second on a wild pickoff throw by the catcher. Scotto followed with an RBI double to left. In the seventh, Ornstein led off with a single. She tagged and went to second on a foul out to the catcher behind home plate and moved to third on a Meyers single. Meyers stole second, Scotto drove in Ornstein with a sac fly to center, and Barry followed with a two-run blast to left for her sixth homer of the season.
