CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland scored all 12 of its runs between the sixth and seventh innings - sending 10 batters to the plate each inning - to erase a three-run deficit and the Red Dragons defeated St. Lawrence, 12-5, in non-league baseball action at Wallace Field.
Cortland (22-9-1) finished with 13 hits and six walks.
Nolan Smith (Hamburg) went 3-for-4 with a walk and RBI,
Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and
Mat Bruno (Rye) and
Nick Plue (Guilderland) each finished 2-for-4, with Bruno also drawing a walk and driving in a run.
Zach Taro (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) hit his first collegiate homer - a pinch-hit, three-run shot in a five-run seventh inning.
In addition,
Dylan Tierney (East Greenbush/Columbia) was 1-for-2 and drove in three runs and
Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished 1-for-3 with two walks.
Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) scored two runs.
Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius), now 3-0, earned the win after allowing two hits and no walks and striking out four in four scoreless innings after entering in the top of the fourth with Cortland trailing 3-0.
Ryan Banks (Woodbury/Syosset) started and allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks in three innings.
St. Lawrence (10-17) used seven pitchers in the contest. Joshua Polumbo started and shut out Cortland for three innings, allowing three hits and a walk and fanning one batter. Teaghin Andre and John Igoe each pitched a scoreless frame. Sam Fosberg allowed seven runs in the sixth, but only one earned, and took the loss. Eoin Morrissey drove in two runs and Jack Finnegan went 2-for-5 for the Saints.
The guests took a 2-0 lead in the second without a hit, opening the inning with a hit by pitch and walk, scoring a run on an error during a Mike Siano sac bunt, and plating another run on Morrissey's RBI groundout. Willie Landman hit a sac fly in the third to make it 3-0.
Cortland's seven-run sixth started with a two-base error and a Kelly RBI single.
Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck) hit an RBI single three batters later and the Red Dragons scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Bruno's bunt single drove in the go-ahead run. Two batters later, Tierney came up with the bases loaded and hit a single to left that drove in two runs. Tierney got caught in a rundown between first and second during the play, and Cortland scored another run before Tierney was tagged out to end the inning.
JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) and Mieczkowski each walked to start the seventh and advanced a base on a Plue sac bunt. Taro followed with a blast to left center to give Cortland a 10-3 lead. The other two runs in the frame came via a Smith RBI single and a Tierney RBI fielder's choice. St. Lawrence closed the scoring with two runs in the eighth on a Siano RBI single and Morrissey RBI fielder's choice.
