Janis Surpasses 100 Career Assists in 17-4 Win at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Rachel Janis (Laurel Mattituck) became just the sixth player in program history to surpass 100 career assists as the Cortland women's lacrosse team closed its regular season with a 17-4 victory at Oswego on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons extended their winning streak to 10 consecutive games, improving to 12-4 overall and 9-0 in the SUNYAC, and will host a conference semifinal game on Wednesday, May 1, against an opponent to be determined.

After tying the single-game assist record in her last game, Janis broke the record with nine against Oswego, also adding a goal. She now has 106 assists in her career. Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) tied her career high with seven goals for the Red Dragons. Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) tallied two goals and an assist, and Ashley Melillo (Masapequa) and Mackenzie Beck (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) each netted a pair of goals. Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland), Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul. V. Moore) scored one goal apiece, while Gwen Laukaitis (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) added an assist.

Goalie Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) turned aside five shots through three quarters for Cortland. Trinity Parks (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) stopped two shots in the fourth quarter. Hoeffner secured eight draw controls, and Julie Kadletz (Shoreham-Shoreham-Wading River) scooped up five ground balls.

Julia Quirk led Oswego with two goals. Sela Wiley and Alexis Hill each scored a goal, and Madison Davis recorded an assist. Goalie Sarah Kamide stopped 10 shots in 58:09. Goalie Alana Lacovissi did not register a save in 1:51 for the Lakers. Quirk won five draws, and Wiley collected three ground balls.

The Red Dragons took control of the game early by scoring the first 10 goals of the contest, building an 8-0 lead after just the first quarter. Janis picked up her 100th career assist on Beck's first goal at 10:15 of the opening quarter. Quirk and Wiley netted back-to-back goals to stop Cortland's run, but Janis and Cashman finished off the first half with goals less than a minute apart to make it a 12-2 game at the half.

Quirk opened the third quarter with her second goal just 20 seconds in before the Red Dragons scored three straight in taking a 15-3 lead into the final 15 minutes of play. Janis picked up her seventh and eighth assists of the game in the fourth quarter on goals by Hoeffner and Beck, while Hill scored for the Lakers for the 17-4 final. Janis recorded her program-record ninth assist on Beck's goal at the 4:13 mark.
