Cortland Secures SUNYAC Playoff Berth, Surpasses 20-Win Mark, with Sweep at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team secured a spot in the six-team SUNYAC postseason tournament with a doubleheader sweep at Oswego. The Red Dragons won the first game, 12-3 in five innings, and the second game, 3-1.
 
Cortland (21-7, 11-3 SUNYAC) reached the 20-win mark and qualified for the SUNYAC tournament for the 27th straight full season (1997-2019, 2021-24). The Red Dragons' non-league home doubleheader Sunday versus RPI has been canceled. Cortland is scheduled to wrap up SUNYAC regular-season play with home doubleheaders Friday versus Potsdam and Saturday against Plattsburgh
 
Cortland 12, Oswego 3 (5 inn.)
 
Cortland jumped out early in the opener with six runs in the first, one in the second and four in the third to take an 11-1 lead. Oswego scored twice in the third to pull within 11-3 before Cortland added a run in the fourth. The game was called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
 
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) earned the win in the circle, allowing three runs on six hits in four innings. She struck out three and walked one. Barry is 13-2 on the season. Katerina DaSilva (West Islip) pitched a scoreless fifth inning, allowing just one walk.
 
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored to pace Cortland's 12-hit attack. Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) was 2-for-2 with a hit by pitch and an RBI. Gina Meyers (Liverpool) drove in two runs and scored twice and Lainie Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) was 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI.
 
Lily Fanea was 2-for-2 with a walk and RBI for Oswego. Chelsea Sellars took the loss after allowing 12 runs, 10 earned, in five innings.
 
Cortland's six-run first was highlighted by a Meyers RBI triple, a Scotto run-scoring single, Barry's RBI double and a Scheibe RBI single. Wright singled in a run in the second, and Scotto and Wright had two-run singles in the third. Meyers drove in Cortland's final run with a sac fly in the fourth.
 
Cortland 3, Oswego 1
 
Kim Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) earned the win for the Red Dragons in Game 2 in a duel against Oswego's Fiona Higgins. Westenberg allowed just three hits and one unearned run, striking out three and walking one, and is 8-3 on the year. Higgins allowed three runs, one earned, on eight hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.
 
Oswego took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Kira Wright reached on an error, then stole second and moved to third on a passed ball on the same play. Higgins drove her in with a sac fly to center.

Cortland tied the game in the top of the fifth. Tori Reich (Cornwall) led off with a triple and scored on a Scotto one-out single to center. The Red Dragons took the lead with two runs in the sixth. Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) singled with one out and on the play advanced to second on an error. Ornstein reached via infield single, with pinch runner Maggie Cummings (Holland Patent) holding at second. Cummings and Ornstein each advanced on a passed ball, and another passed ball allowed Cummings to score and moved Ornstein to third. With two outs, Meyers singled up the middle to drive in Ornstein.
 
Oswego got runners to first and second with one out in the sixth before a flyout and lineout ended the threat. Westenberg retired the side in order in the seventh.
 
Reich went 2-for-4 with a triple, Westenberg finished 1-for-2 with a double and two walks and Koch was 1-for-3 with a walk to lead Cortland's offense. Kylie Detz was 1-for-1 and Jenna Mills and Ellie Mahoney each finished 1-for-3 for Oswego (7-21, 2-12 SUNYAC).
