CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team went on a four-goal run spanning the third and fourth quarters to earn a 12-10 non-conference victory versus Nazareth Wednesday afternoon at Grady Field. The Red Dragons improved to 6-3 on the season, while the Golden Flyers fell to 8-4.
Klay Stuver (Fairport) led seven Cortland goal scorers with three in the game, all in the second half.
Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded two goals and two assists,
Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) tallied two goals and an assist and
Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) netted two goals.
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) finished with four points on a goal and three assists for the Red Dragons.
Josh Michel (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored a goal, and
Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) added an assist.
Goalie
Travis Wagner (Penfield) made 19 saves for Cortland.
Aidan McHugh (Maine/Maine-Endwell) won 14-of-24 faceoffs and scooped up eight ground balls.
Christian Lembo (Farmingdale) and
Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) collected five ground balls each, and
Dino Bowen (Yorktown) secured three ground balls.
Quinn Conroy led the Nazareth offense with two goals and an three assists. Kyle Rosenberger and Andy Hamel netted two goals apiece. Quinn McKercher recorded a goal and three assists, Louis Cogliandro, Owen Riley and Joey Hathorn scored a goal and William Meagher and Luke Suchyna picked up an assist.
Goalie McLean Ralston stopped 10 shots. Jakob Denkenberger won 10 faceoffs and collected six ground balls. Ben Chaddock scooped up five ground balls, and Rosenberger collected three ground balls.
The Golden Flyers jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first 15 minutes, ending the quarter with four straight goals. After the teams traded goals to open the second quarter, Yancey scored back-to-back goals to pull the Red Dragons to withing 7-5 at the half.
Cortland took its first lead with the first three goals of the third quarter, but Nazareth went back ahead with the next two goals to hold a 9-8 lead at the 5:40 mark of the quarter. Stuver tied the game late in the quarter to make it a 9-9 game heading into the final 15 minutes.
Stuver, Kavanagh and Stoecker strung together three goals to give Cortland a 12-9 lead at 6:32 of the fourth quarter. Rosenberger pulled the Golden Flyers to within two goals with a goal at 5:19. Late in the game, Nazareth held possession after Cortland ran down the shot clock and missed the cage with a late shot. The Golden Flyers, however, turned the ball over giving the Red Dragons possession with under 1:30 to play. Nazareth took a 30-second penalty with 57 seconds remaining, and Cortland ran out the clock to seal the 12-10 victory.
