Cortland Escapes with 11-10 Win at Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team scored the final two goals of the game in the closing minutes and held off a late chance by Brockport in defeating the Golden Eagles, 11-10, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons raised their overall record to 7-3 and their conference mark to 3-0. The Golden Eagles fell to 2-8 and 1-2.

Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) led Cortland offensively with six points on four goals and two assists. Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) netted a career-best three goals. Klay Stuver (Fairport) and Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) scored two goals apiece, Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) collected two assists and Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) chipped in with one assist.

Goalie Travis Wagner (Penfield) registered 17 saves for the Red Dragons. Aidan McHugh (Maine/Maine-Endwell) won eight faceoffs and recorded three ground balls.

Nick Askin scored three goals to lead Brockport's offense. Nate Askin tallied two goals and two assists. Daniel Wright contributed one goal and one assist, Jackson Worden, Logan Postel, Andrew DiPalma and Garrett Smith each netted a goal and Tim Hubbard added an assist.

Goalie Gavin Miller turned aside 18 shots. DiPalma won 14-of-24 faceoffs and scooped up five ground balls, while Hubbard secured six ground balls and caused three turnovers.

The teams traded goal runs throughout the game. Cortland took a 2-0 lead before Brockport strung together three goals to end the first quarter with a 3-2 advantage. The Red Dragons went up 5-3 after three straight goals to open the second quarter, but the Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead with a three-goal run of their own. Stuver tied the game at 6-6 with a goal just three seconds before halftime.

Cortland outscored Brockport, 2-0, in the third quarter to grab an 8-6 lead. Rothman opened the final 15 minutes of play with a goal just 34 seconds into the quarter. Brockport countered the Red Dragon goal run with four consecutive scores to take a 10-9 lead with 5:21 to play.

Stuver tied the game with a low shot at 3:41 before Yancey scored his fourth goal of the game off a feed from Scanlon at the 2:14 mark to give Cortland back the lead. Rich Finn (LaGrange/Arlington) won the ensuing faceoff, but the Red Dragons turned the ball over with under a minute to play.

The Golden Eagles worked a good clear and called timeout with 32 seconds to play. After the restart, Brockport shot wide right once, hit the right pipe on a second chance and Wagner stopped a final long desperation shot just before the final horn to secure the 11-10 victory.
