Quick Start Leads to 22-6 Win vs. Hartwick

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's lacrosse team raced out to a 10-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in earning a 22-6 victory in non-conference action versus Hartwick College Friday night at Grady Field. The Red Dragons improved to 7-4 on the season. The Hawks fell to 4-5.

Twelve different players scored goals for Cortland, led by Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) and Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) with four each. Cashman also chipped in with an assist. Mackenzie Beck (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) tallied three goals and an assist, and Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) and Gwen Laukaitis (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) netted two goals apiece.

Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) recorded four points on one goal and three assists for the Red Dragons, while Brooke Elizalde (Ronkokoma/Connetquot) picked up a goal and an assist. Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland), Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead), Lauren McCulloch (Loudonville/Shaker) and Bridie McGuire (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) each scored a goal.

Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) started in goal for Cortland, making one save in the opening half. Trinity Parks (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) stopped one shot in the second half. Melillo added five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, Cashman contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers and Hoeffner secured 12 draw controls.

Hanna Goodreau and Kristen Vaccarelli paced Hartwick's offense with two goals. Emily Madigan and Claudia Pollaro each scored a goal, and Katrina Marten recorded four assists.

Brooke Lynett registered seven saves in the first half before giving way to Alexa Patrakis, who stopped seven shots and caused two turnovers in the second half. Vaccarelli added four ground balls, three draws and two caused turnovers.
