CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland field hockey team opened the season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Montclair State in a non-league contest.
Jamie Snyder (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse),
Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and
Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) each scored for the Red Dragons and
Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) picked up an assist.
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) recorded one save in goal.
Natalie Surma scored the lone goal for Montclair State (0-1) and McKenna Laman made seven saves. Cortland outshot the Red Hawks, 12-6, and held a 10-6 edge in penalty corners.
Cortland took the lead with 5:47 left in the first half when Trunfio dribbled through defenders and took a shot that looked like it was going to trickle wide right. Snyder, however, dove near the right post and redirected the ball into the cage.
The Red Dragons extended their lead 4:20 into the third quarter when Adams stole the ball, dribbled a good distance into the circle and scored from the right side. Corrigan pushed the lead to 3-0 with 6:02 left in the game with a steal and a reverse-stick blast from the left side. Montclair broke up Cortland's shutout bid with 3:32 left when Maisto took a shot from the middle of the circle that Surma redirected into the cage from right near the goal line.
Cortland hosts nationally 18th-ranked Franklin and Marshall on Sunday at noon.
