Cortland Rallies Late, Wins in OT, vs. F&M in Matchup of Ranked Teams

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) tied the game with 1:14 left in regulation and Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) scored the game-winning goal 1:49 into overtime as nationally 15th-ranked Cortland rallied for a 4-3 win over 18th-ranked Franklin & Marshall in a non-league field hockey matchup at the Cortland Stadium Complex.

Cortland (2-0) led 2-0 entering the fourth quarter before the Diplomats (0-2) struck for three goals to take a 3-2 lead.

Ettere finished with two goals and Corrigan had a goal and two assists. Sydney Reinisch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) also scored for the Red Dragons and Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made seven saves. For F&M, Jessica Miller ended with a goal and an assist and Caitlin Hoover and Megan Dadio each scored once. Meghan Dole turned aside eight shots.

Ettere gave Cortland a quick 1-0 lead when she tapped in a rebound just 1:07 into the contest. Reinisch pushed the lead to 2-0 with 1:29 left in the first half when she converted a pass from Corrigan into a shot from the left side that found the cage.

F&M started its comeback on a Dadio goal, off a rebound of her initial shot, just 42 seconds into the fourth. The Diplomats knotted the game with 8:49 left when Hoover collected a pass from Miller to the right of the goal and scored. Just less than two minutes later Miller was stopped by Morgan but scored off the rebound to put F&M on top.

With time winding down and Cortland down a player due to a yellow card, Corrigan gained control of the ball and dribbled past defenders into the left side of the circle. She then crossed the ball to Ettere, who was open in front of the cage, for a tap-in to tie the game.

In the 7-versus-7 overtime period, Cortland was still down a player but was able to control the ball and advance it into the F&M defensive zone. The Red Dragons were awarded a penalty corner and Corrigan had a shot blocked. Another corner was awarded, and on that one Corrigan took control of the ball at the top of the circle, made moves to beat two different defenders and shot from in close to tally the winning goal.

Cortland finished with a 22-15 advantage in shots and a slight 9-8 edge in corners.

Cortland and F&M played for the first time since F&M defeated the Red Dragons in Pennsylvania in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Division III playoffs. The teams also met eight times between 1983-95, with Cortland winning six of those matchups.
