Piper Klammer's Late Goal Lifts Cortland to 3-2 Win over R.P.I.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Piper Klammer (Mahopac) scored the game-winning goal with 1:06 remaining in the second half to lift the Cortland women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over visiting R.P.I. in the season opener on Holloway field on Friday evening. Cortland moves to 1-0-0 with the win, while R.P.I. fell to 0-1-0.

Klammer netted two goals to lead Cortland in her first game as a Red Dragon, while senior Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) chipped in a goal. Graduate student Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward Melville), junior Julia DeTurris (Hicksville), and sophomore Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) each had an assist, while senior  goalkeeper Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) turned aside seven shots.

Freshman Meadow O'Connell (Uxbridge, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) had both of the Engineers' goals, and Megan Wampner (Plano, Tx./Ursuline Academy of Dallas) came on at halftime in goal for R.P.I to make seven saves. Sarah Sedlacek (Belchertown, Mass) had an assist on O'Connell's second goal.

Cortland opened the scoring just 1:12 into the game, as Allen took a through ball from Cosenza and angled a shot into the bottom right corner of the net. Spendal came up with three impressive saves in the span of three minutes, including diving to her right to deny O'Connell on a free kick from just outside the box. The Red Dragons doubled their advantage late in the half, with Klammer running onto Vuotto's pass and dribbling around the keeper, before slotting into an empty net.

The Red Dragons had an opportunity to grab a three-goal edge in the first ten minutes of the second half, but a pair of strong saves by Wampner denied Cosenza and Vuotto. The Engineers scored to make it 2-1 just past the hour mark, as O'Connell's shot from outside the box after a failed clearance attempt floated just over Spendal's outstretched arms.

Allen was alone on goal in the 64th minute, but Wampner was quick off her line to stop the Red Dragons from scoring an insurance goal. Shortly after, O'Connell's second goal tied the score at 2-2 in the 74th minute. With the Engineers pressing for an equalizer, Sedlacek sent a pass from the right sideline to O'Connell outside of the box, who struck a curling shot with her right foot into the top left corner of the net.

Cortland continued to push forward, and was rewarded after DeTurris' cross in the 89th minute fell to the feet of Klammer, who struck it into the net for the game-winning goal.
