CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) and
Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) scored goals and Cortland held off a late Ithaca rally as the nationally 12th-ranked Red Dragons remained unbeaten with a 2-1 victory over the 17th-ranked Bombers Wednesday evening at the Cortland Stadium Complex.
Cortland improved to 4-0 with the victory while Ithaca dropped to 3-2.
Cortland struck 8:17 into the contest when Trunfio sent a pass behind the Ithaca defense to Ettere, who made a move to beat the goal and reverse-sticked a shot into the cage. The game remained 1-0 until Trunfio added an insurance goal with 8:05 left in the fourth quarter.
Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) took a reverse stick shot from the left side that was saved by Ithaca goalie Maeve Clark. Trunfio battled for the rebound, gathered the ball and while stumbling toward the ground flicked home a shot to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.
Ithaca got on the board with just 40 seconds remaining when Brady Sullivan, in front of the cage, redirected in a shot from Meara Bury. The Bombers, however, were not able to get any shot attempts at the potential tying goal.
Cortland goalie
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) finished with three saves, including one with about 10 minutes left to preserve a one-goal lead. Clark stopped five shots on goal for Ithaca. The teams each registered 12 shots and Ithaca held a 6-3 penalty corner advantage.
