OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Cortland women's tennis team dropped their SUNYAC opener, falling 6-1 at unbeaten Oswego.
The Red Dragons are now 2-2 overall (0-1 SUNYAC) while the Lakers improved to 9-0 overall (2-0 SUNYAC).
Oswego opened the competition by earning the team doubles point after claiming two out of three flights. Cortland's
Christina Massoni (West Babylon) and
Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) won 6-2 at first doubles, but Oswego's Kathryn Salamida and Emily Lyga won 6-2 at second doubles and Emily DeLuca and Leah Bell won 6-2 at third doubles.
Cortland's lone singles victory came from Madigan, 6-0, 6-0, at number three. Salamida and Cortland's
Mary Repass (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) split the first two sets at second singles, with Salamida winning 7-6 and Repass winning 6-1. Salamida won a super tiebreaker to 10 points, 10-7, in lieu of a third set.
Hannah Green (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) battled in her second set at fourth singles before falling to Bell, 6-0, 7-5.
Preston Fuerbacher (Fairport) and
Gabriella Stanley (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) each lost by identical 6-0, 6-4 scores at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, to DeLuca and Avery Borman. Lyga won 6-1, 6-1 at first singles.
Cortland hosts Fredonia in SUNYAC action Saturday at 1 p.m.
