CORTLAND, N.Y. – Jamie Snyder (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) scored midway through the first quarter, and the nationally-10th ranked Cortland field hockey team held nationally-19th ranked Rochester without a shot on goal, as the Red Dragons earned a 1-0 victory on Stadium White on Wednesday night in a matchup of undefeated squads. Cortland moves to 8-0 on the year, while Rochester falls to 8-1.
Snyder's goal was her fifth of the season, moving into third place on the team in goals.
Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) registered an assist for the Red Dragons.
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) recorded her fourth consecutive shutout, and fifth of the season.
Rochester goalie Kara Houston made two saves in goal to keep the Yellowjackets within striking distance, and the Yellowjackets also had a defensive save by Jodie Zeng. Grayson Honig had two of Rochester's four shot attempts in the game.
Cortland got the scoring started 7:05 into the contest on its first shot attempt, as
Carolena Purpura (Centerport/Harborfields) sent a pass from the right side that Ettere stopped and passed to Snyder. Snyder took the pass, took two steps to the left, and fired a reverse-stick shot into the left corner to give Cortland a 1-0 advantage.
Rochester had a strong opportunity in the middle of the second quarter with a potential breakaway, but Purpura sprinted back and did extremely well to prevent a shot attempt. Cortland had a pair of shot attempts that were blocked in the frame, and Snyder had a shot in the closing seconds of the half that Zeng stopped for a defensive save.
Midway through the third quarter,
Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) attempted to play in
Sidney DeMagistris (Gloversville), but the pass was just too far out in front. Minutes later, Adams had a shot attempt go off the left post as the Red Dragons were unable to find an insurance goal.
Cortland increased the pressure in the fourth quarter, holding a 9-1 edge in shot attempts in the frame. With three minutes to go,
Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) was denied by a lunging save from Houston. In the following seconds, Snyder was just off to the left on the shot from close range as Cortland completed the one-goal victory.
