NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team opened State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday afternoon, playing to a scoreless draw on the road at New Paltz. Cortland goes to 2-2-4 (0-0-1 SUNYAC), while New Paltz is 5-2-2 (0-0-1 SUNYAC).
Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) made eight saves in goal for her third shutout of the season.
Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) had a pair of shots on goal, while
Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) and
Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) each had one shot on goal.
Rachel Eisert had three shots on goal for the Hawks, while Maddie Franklin made four saves in goal for the shutout.
New Paltz controlled play through the early part of the first half, tallying the first 11 shot attempts and holding Cortland without a shot attempt until the 38th minute. Spendal recorded five saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless. The Red Dragons had the final two shots of the half, as Vuotto and Cosenza were each denied on shot attempts.
Early in the second half, Cosenza tested Franklin with a shot attempt, but the New Paltz keeper was able to make the save. The Hawks had their three shots on goal of the second half in a ten-minute span from the 60th minute to 69th minute, all of which Spendal was able to stop. Allen had the final shot on target in the 83rd minute, but couldn't break the deadlock with the chance.
