Red Dragons Open Season with 7-0 Win at Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Cortland women's tennis team opened its 2024-25 season with a 7-0 non-league victory at Houghton University.

Under new rules this year, doubles play accounts for only one team point for the team that wins at least two of the three doubles matches, and the doubles matches are now played as a pro-set to six games (instead of eight).

Cortland swept doubles play to earn the opening team point. Christina Massoni (West Babylon) and Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) won 6-2 at first doubles, Mary Repass (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Alexandra Thut (Poughquag/Arlington) swept their opponents at second doubles, 6-0, and Preston Fuerbacher (Fairport) and Gabriella Stanley (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) also were perfect with a 6-0 win at third doubles.

Cortland won all six singles matches in straight sets. Massoni registered a 6-3, 6-1 win on the first flight and Repass won 6-1, 6-1 at number two. Madigan cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at third singles and Fuerbacher won at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-1. Thut won the tightest match of the day, outlasting Kelsi Clapper in fifth singles, 7-5, 6-4, and Stanley earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory at sixth singles. Houghton fell to 0-3 with the loss.

Cortland will host Hartwick in non-league action Sunday at 11 a.m.
