Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Kristen Spendal Leads Cortland in Scoreless Draw with #6 Rochester

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior goalkeeper Kristen Spendal (Dumont, N.J.) stopped all eight shots on target that she faced, leading the Cortland women's soccer team in a scoreless draw against nationally-sixth ranked Rochester on Saturday afternoon on Holloway Field. Both Cortland and Rochester are now 2-0-1 on the season with the tie.

Spendal earned her first shutout of the season, and 18th of her career in 41 games. Sophomore Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) had two shots on goal to lead the Red Dragons, while graduate students Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward-Melville) and Cam Stone (Illion/Central Valley Academy), fifth-year Simone Neivel (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), sophomore Piper Klammer (Mahopac), and freshman Emma Frohne (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) each had one shot on target.

Natalie Santangelo had four shots on goal to lead Rochester, while Grace Kuropatkin made seven saves to keep a shutout for the Yellowjackets.

Santangelo test Spendal early in the contest, with a shot into the bottom right corner that Spendal was able to dive to snare. The Red Dragons looked to be in on goal twice in the opening 10 minutes, but the offsides flag went up both times to stop threatening opportunities.

The Red Dragons had their best opportunity of the first half in the 32nd minute, as Frohne's shot from down the left side was parried out by Kuropatkin for a Cortland corner kick. The ensuing set piece fizzled out, with Stone's shot from distance being saved and handled by the Rochester keeper.

The Yellowjackets ramped up the pressure in the second half, holding a 13-5 advantage in shot attempts. The Cortland back line did well to limit shot attempts inside the penalty area even with the increased pressure.

Completely against the run of play, Cortland had a great opportunity to counter-attack, but Klammer was denied at close range by a strong saved by Kuropatkin to keep the game scoreless with eight minutes left.

In the final minutes, Spendal snagged three shot attempts to prevent Rochester from finding a game-winning goal.
