Cortland Defeats Oswego, 81-65, to Take Over SUNYAC Lead

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland men's basketball team moved into first place in the SUNYAC standings with an 81-65 win over visiting Oswego.
 
Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) led the Red Dragons (5-7, 4-1 SUNYAC) with 20 points. He made 7-of-12 field goals and all five of his free throws. Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) made four 3-pointers and ended with 18 points and five assists and Isaiah Austin (Albany) set a career-high in scoring for the second straight day with 17 points. Austin was 7-of-10 from the field overall and 3-of-6 from the 3-point arc.
 
Gerrad Beaubrun (Baldwin) hit 4-of-5 shots and finished with nine points and Kendrick Wilson (Wheatley Heights/Moravian Prep (NC)) totaled eight points and nine rebounds. Joel Davis (Watertown) led Cortland on the glass with 10 rebounds and Gaige Armbrewster (Oakfield/Oakfield-Alabama) had three assists.
 
Billy Reyes led Oswego (7-5, 3-2 SUNYAC) with 16 points off the bench. He made 7-of-9 shots with two 3-pointers. Deacon Judd scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.
 
Cortland shot 48 percent from the floor and 12-of-34 (35 percent) from 3-point range. Oswego finished at 46 percent overall but just 3-of-14 (21 percent) from deep. Cortland committed just one turnover in the first half and had only six turnovers through the game's first 36 minutes.
 
The Red Dragons outscored the Lakers 17-6 over the final 3:31 of the first half to take a 43-31 halftime lead. Coston (11), Austin (11) and Arcuri (10) all scored in double figures over the first 20 minutes. Cortland led by double figures the entire second half, building a 17-point lead over the first 4:11 of the half and pushing the margin to 20 with 13 minutes remaining. Cortland led 26 points at 79-53 with 4:17 left before Oswego closed the game on a 12-2 run.
 
Cortland sits a half game ahead of New Paltz (3-1) in the SUNYAC standings. Cortland travels to Buffalo State Tuesday for a 6 p.m. league contest.
