#13/9 Cortland Takes Down Manhattanville 6-2

CORTLAND, NY – Twelve different players registered a point as the Cortland men's hockey team, ranked 13tth nationally by USCHO and ninth nationally by DIII Hockey News, earned a dominant 6-2 victory over Manhattanville on Saturday evening at Alumni Arena. Cortland improves to 9-4 on the year, while Manhattanville falls to 3-8-1.

Johnny Facchini (Succasunna, NJ/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) led Cortland with three points on one goal and two assists. Evan Beaudry (Mississauga, ON/Kemptville 73's) had three assists for the Red Dragons, and Nathan Garnier (Laval, QC/Cornwall Colts) provided two assists.

Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres), Conor Humphrey (Penfield/Rochester Jr. Americans), Dino Mannetta (Wading River/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders), Devlin O'Kane (Chicago, IL/New Jersey 87's), and Domenic Settimo (East Meadow/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) each scored a goal for Cortland, while Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Ray, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) stopped 20 shots to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Zach Turner and Artem Mateichenko each scored a goal for the Valiants, and Tripp Clarke made 41 saves.

The first period started slowly, with one penalty and two shots on goal for each team over the first seven minutes.

With just over eight minutes remaining, Cortland broke the deadlock with O'Kane's first goal of the season. Anthony Bernardo (Hauppauge/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) made a slick play to snare the puck out of mid-air and fed Robert Hyde (North Babylon/New Jersey Titans) for a shot from just inside the right circle. The initial shot was saved, but O'Kane collected the rebound and deposited the puck past Clarke to make it 1-0.

Manhattanville responded less than two minutes later, as Mateichenko sniped a shot just off the bottom of the crossbar past Mobley to tie the score at 1-1.

With just over a minute remaining in the period, Settimo ripped a one-timer from the left circle after a cross-ice feed from Brady Hildreth (Lockport/New Jersey Titans) to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 advantage in the intermission.

Cortland dominated play in the second period, scoring four goals in the frame to extend the lead to 6-1. The Red Dragons also held Manhattanville to just three shots on goal, all three of which Mobley routinely stopped.

Just under seven minutes into the period, Mannetta fired a shot from the right point past Clarke after Facchini had kept the puck inside the blue line on a clearance attempt by the Valiants.

With 7:20 remaining, Facchini received a pass from Garnier at the blue line, skated around a defender, and ripped a shot into the corner of the net to make it 4-1. Justin Legault (Oakville, ON/Burlington Cougars) had the other assist on the goal.

The Red Dragons made it 5-1 with under four minutes remaining, as Humphrey knocked in a rebound in front after Facchini's initial shot was saved. Two minutes later, Berke tapped in a shot after a feed from Garnier to extend the lead to 6-1. Beaudry was credited with assists on the final two goals of the period.

Under two minutes into the third period, Manhattanville scored for the final tally, as Turner cut down the left side and scored after a breakout pass from teammate Johno Hoins.

Manhattanville commited a five-minute major penalty, and subsequent game misconduct, as well as a tripping penalty in the final period. The Red Dragons had multiple opportunities to add to the total, but were denied by the post twice along with a few solid saves by Clarke. Down a skater for most of the final minutes, the Valiants were unable to produce a comeback.
