MANCHESTER, NH – Justin Legault (Oakville, ON/Burlington Cougars) scored his first collegiate hat trick and
Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) had a five-point night, as the Cortland men's hockey team, ranked 14th nationally by USCHO and 12th nationally by DIII Hockey News, cruised to an 8-2 road victory over St. Anselm on Tuesday evening. Cortland improves to 10-4 on the year, while St. Anselm falls to 7-7-2.
Legault's goals were his fifth, sixth, and seventh of the year, and the freshman added an assist for the Red Dragons. Berke contributed a goal and four assists in the game, and now has 17 points in the last eight games for Cortland.
Domenic Settimo (East Meadow/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) scored a pair of goals,
Johnny Facchini (Succasunna, NJ/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) had three assists,
Dino Mannetta (Wading River/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) chipped in two assists, and
Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi Ice Rays) and
Sam Christiano (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) each netted a goal.
Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Ray, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) stopped 28-of-30 shots in goal for the Red Dragons, and also provided an assist.
Steve Armstrong and Chase Reynolds scored a goal apiece for the Hawks.
Settimo got the scoring started for the Red Dragons 4:21 into the first period, knocking in his own rebound for his fifth goal of the season. Mannetta and Facchini each were credited with assists on the goal.
St. Anselm responded to tie the score with under five minutes remaining in the frame on a goal by Reynolds.
Legault helped Cortland regain the advantage with 20 seconds remaining in the period, with Berke and
Evan Beaudry (Mississauga, ON/Kemptville 73's) assisting. The Red Dragons held a 16-6 edge in shots on goal in the period.
Cortland scored four times in the second period to take control of the contest.
Legault netted his second goal of the game just before the midway point off assists from Berke and Mobley to make it 3-1.
The Hawks pulled back to within a goal at 3-2 with 5:25 left in the period, but Settimo responded with his second goal of the game only 21 seconds later.
Conor Humphrey (Penfield/Rochester Jr. Americans) and Facchini were awarded assists on the goal.
Legault completed his hat trick with under four minutes remaining, with assists by
Nathan Garnier (Laval, QC/Cornwall Colts) and Berke. Christiano made it 6-2 with 35 seconds left in the period, assisted by
Andrew Clouden (Hamburg/Seacoast Spartans) and
Matthew DeSpirt (Hamburg/Buffalo Jr. Sabres).
Berke added his fourth assist of the game on Seitz's goal in the opening three minutes of the third period, and completed the scoring with 3:10 remaining in the contest, with Legault and Mannetta providing assists.
