BUFFALO, NY – Kira Cook (Lake Ronkonkoma/Northwood School) scored two goals, and the Cortland women's hockey team, ranked 10th nationally by USCHO and ninth nationally by DIII Hockey News, completed a weekend sweep over Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action with a 4-1 win on Saturday afternoon. Cortland improves to 9-2-1 (5-2-0 SUNYAC), while Buffalo State falls to 4-10-1 (1-8-1 SUNYAC).
Josselyn Drayson (Dallas, TX/Dallas Stars Elite) scored her first collegiate goal, and
Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound 19UAAA) netted her fifth goal of the year.
Olivia Lumpiesz (Pinckney, MI/Biggby Hockey Club U19), making her first start of the season, made 22 saves in goal.
Meggan Cramer (Cicero/Northwood School),
McKenzie Brown (Peru/Lovell Academy), and
Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19) each tallied an assist.
Buffalo State's goal was scored by Sydney Radecki and assisted by Lilliana Adimey. Jessica Auge made 32 saves in goal.
Cortland opened the scoring 5:15 into the first period, as Drayson found the back of the net to give Cortland a 1-0 lead. The Red Dragons made it 2-0 before the midway point of the period, as Cook intercepted a breakout pass, deked the Buffalo State goaltender, and deposited a shot into the open goal.
Buffalo State scored to make it 2-1 late in the second period, with Radecki scoring her fourth goal of the season. The score remained 2-1 into the second intermission.
Just 52 seconds into the third period, the Bengals committed a hooking penalty, leading to Cook's second goal of the game, assisted by Cramer and Brown, at the 1:33 mark of the period. Persinger completed the scoring at 6:20 of the period, knocking in a rebound after Hlasnick's initial shot was saved for Cortland's second power-play goal.
