CORTLAND, NY – Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19) scored the game-tying goal with 1:07 left in regulation, and
Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U19) netted the winner 1:44 into overtime, as the nationally ninth-ranked Cortland women's hockey team earned a 2-1 comeback victory over Canton on Friday at Alumni Arena. Cortland improves to 11-2-1 (6-2-0 SUNYAC), while Canton falls to 4-10-0 (3-6-0 SUNYAC).
Kopek's goal was her seventh of the season to lead the team, while Hlasnick netted her fifth goal of the year.
Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) and
Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) each provided an assist.
Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) stopped 23 shots in goal to earn the victory.
Danika Lalonde scored Canton's lone goal, and Molly Lenihan stopped 34 shots in goal.
Canton opened the scoring just over 12 minutes into the first period, as Lalonde took a shot that was partially saved by Goergen, but the puck popped into the air and into the net as Goergen was unable to locate the puck.
Minutes later, Goergen made a strong save on Kyra O'Keefe in front of goal to keep the Cortland deficit at one into the first intermission. Canton outshot Cortland 10-8 in the first period.
Eight minutes into the second period,
Grace Karakas (Duluth, MN/Duluth East) skated around a Canton defender, but had her backhand shot saved by Lenihan.
Cortland had its first power play midway through the frame, but couldn't equalize despite two shots on goal with an extra skater. Minutes later, the Roos had a goal wiped out for goaltender interference as the score remained 1-0. With under five minutes left in the period, Lalonde intercepted the puck but Goergen came up with a huge save to keep the Red Dragons in the game.
Cortland continued to increase the pressure in the third period, and pulled Goergen for an extra attacker with under three minutes remaining. Hlasnick skated around a defender and buried a wrist shot from the left circle into the top left corner of the net with just over a minute remaining to knot the score at 1-1. Delacourt and Aneborn were awarded assists.
Cortland had the first big opportunity one minute into the overtime period, as
Kayla Persinger had a shot from the slot stopped by Lenihan. Persinger then made an excellent play to chase down a Canton forward who tried to go on a breakaway at the other end.
Less than a minute later, Kopek stole the puck in the Cortland defensive zone, chipped the puck down the right side and collected it at the right faceoff dot in the Canton defensive zone, and unleashed a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net for the game-winning goal.
