Cortland Controls Middle Two Quarters in 73-48 Win at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. – Cortland outscored host Utica University by a combined score of 43-16 over the second and third quarters and the Red Dragons defeated the Pioneers, 73-48, in a women's basketball non-league game.

Cortland notched its seventh straight win to improve to 7-1 on the season. The Red Dragons will wrap up their non-league slate Saturday at 2 p.m. at the University of Rochester.
 
Joleen Lusk (Cherry Valley/Cherry Valley-Springfield) led Cortland with 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting. She also recorded four rebounds and three steals. Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) finished with 11 points and three steals and Sophie Bissaillon (East Greenbush/Columbia) hit two 3-pointers and ended with eight points and a team-best three assists. Jackie Funk (Penfield) and Kayla Campbell (Franklin/Franklin Central) each tallied seven points, with Campbell also grabbing a team-high five rebounds.
 
Utica (2-7) was led by Hayleigh Lagese with 14 points and seven rebounds. McKenzie Simmons added 12 points and five rebounds, Vanella Hall scored eight points and Natalie Cornell registered five rebounds and three assists.
 
Cortland trailed 12-4 about midway through the first quarter before closing to within 18-17 at the end of the period. The Red Dragons outscored the Pioneers 26-9 in the second quarter to take a 43-27 halftime lead and then enjoyed a 17-7 advantage in the third to push their lead to 26 points.
 
Cortland shot 58 percent (11-of-19) in the second quarter and 53 percent (8-of-15) in the third quarter and finished the game at 50 percent (30-of-60). The Red Dragons scored 25 points off of 23 Utica turnovers. Utica was held to 33 percent shooting for the game, including a combined 5-of-19 (26 percent) over the middle two periods.
